Description:
Readjustment counseling is offered to assist in making a successful transition from military to civilian life or after a traumatic event experienced in the military.
The Wichita Vet Center!s services include: Individual and group counseling for Veterans and Service Members, Couple and family counseling for military related readjustment issues, Bereavement counseling for families who experience an active duty death, Military Sexual Trauma (MST) counseling, Employment resources and referral, VA benefits explanation and referral, Screening and referral for medical issues, mental health and substance abuseï¬ï Referral for other VA Services
Who is eligible to receive services at Vet Centers? Any Veteran or Active Duty Service Member, to include members of National Guard and Reserve components, are eligible if any of the following applies: Have served on active military duty in any combat theater or area of hostility; Experienced military sexual trauma; Provided direct emergent medical care or mortuary services, while serving on active military duty, to the casualties of war; Served as a member of an unmanned aerial vehicle crew that provided direct support to operations in a combat zone or area of hostility; Vietnam Era Veterans who have accessed care at a Vet Center prior to January 2, 2004.
To receive Vet Center Services, you do not have to be enrolled in VA Healthcare or have a service-connected disability. The Wichita Vet Center is conveniently located in downtown Wichita, separate from the Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center.
Do I need to bring any documentation? Yes, please bring a copy of your DD 214. If this document is not readily available to you, someone will help you obtain a copy.
How long will it take to be seen? In most cases, an appointment will be scheduled within a week. The Wichita Vet Center maintains nontraditional after-hour appointments to accommodate Veterans' work schedules. We offer a non-clinical environment ! to avoid the stigma sometimes associated with other mental health or readjustment care. We promote early intervention ! to make every effort to remove the stigma of seeking assistance.
Vet Center Call Center 1-877-WAR VETS (1.877.927.8387) is an around the clock confidential call center where combat Veterans and their families can call to talk about their military experience or any other issue they are facing in their readjustment to civilian life. The staff is comprised of combat Veterans from several eras as well as family members of combat Veterans. The service is at no cost for combat Veterans and their families so they may find resources they need at their nearest Vet Center. You can contact the Veterans Crisis Line by calling 1-800-273-8255
